WWE’s bizarre “Gingerbread Man” storyline has reportedly exploded into backstage controversy, with several people inside the company said to be furious over the direction of Sami Zayn’s latest feud with Trick Williams. What was supposed to be a dramatic build toward Backlash instead turned into one of the strangest and most heavily criticized segments on SmackDown in recent memory.
According to backstage reports, there was major “creative pushback” before the segment even aired, as multiple WWE insiders reportedly viewed the angle as outdated, awkward and painfully over-the-top. Despite those concerns, the company moved forward with the segment anyway — and it instantly became one of the most talked-about moments of the night.
The chaotic scene saw a newly villainous Sami Zayn confront an empty Gingerbread Man mascot costume in the ring. After teasing hesitation, Zayn suddenly snapped, brutally stomping and attacking the lifeless outfit before delivering a controversial low blow to the mascot character. The bizarre assault left fans both shocked and confused as the segment spiraled deeper into absurdity.
Things became even stranger when Trick Williams rushed to the ring to “save” Gingerbread. During the chaos, Trick flashed the infamous “X” hand signal — a gesture traditionally used by referees and officials to signal a legitimate injury backstage. WWE used the symbol as part of the comedy, but not everyone behind the scenes found it funny. Reports claim several staff members were upset that such a serious symbol was turned into a joke during a comedy segment.
The backlash backstage reportedly intensified after WWE announced plans to continue the storyline on SmackDown’s final episode before Backlash. General Manager Nick Aldis is now expected to host a full “funeral segment” for Gingerbread, complete with a tribute ceremony designed to further mock Sami Zayn and escalate tensions with Trick Williams.
Many within WWE creative are reportedly frustrated by the decision, believing the angle does little to strengthen the United States Championship rivalry heading into Backlash. Instead of building anticipation for the title showdown, critics backstage fear the feud has become overshadowed by cartoonish comedy and bizarre storytelling.
Despite the controversy, the match between Sami Zayn and Trick Williams remains one of the featured attractions for Backlash in Tampa. Zayn is desperate to reclaim the United States Championship after losing the title to Trick Williams at WrestleMania 42, but questions continue to swirl over whether the feud can recover from the polarizing Gingerbread Man saga.
Adding even more uncertainty, fans are also wondering if rapper Lil Yachty — who has recently been aligned with Trick Williams — will continue to be involved in the storyline or quietly disappear alongside the now-infamous Gingerbread mascot. Either way, WWE has once again found itself at the center of heated debate, with fans and insiders sharply divided over one of the company’s most bizarre creative directions of the year.
